Step-by-Step Guide

TIN Registration

Your Tax Identification Number is now mandatory. Here is how to get one.

What is a TIN?

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number assigned to every taxpayer in Nigeria by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). Think of it as your personal tax identity.

Under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025, a TIN is now mandatory for filing tax returns, government contracts, financial services, and official correspondence. It is no longer optional.

Who Needs a TIN?

Everyone who earns income in Nigeria needs a TIN. This includes:

  • Employees receiving a salary
  • Freelancers and self-employed individuals
  • Business owners, sole traders, and companies
  • Property owners earning rental income
  • Anyone who needs a bank account or financial service
  • Anyone applying for government services or official transactions

Even if your income is below the ₦800,000 tax-free threshold, you may still need a TIN for banking and official transactions.

How to Register

    Visit the NRS Portal

Go to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) portal. This is the official portal, formerly operated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
